fabulous woman, wise words

Words from Wise Women: Kate Winslet

When I first saw Titanic in the third grade, I was mesmerized by Kate Winslet’s beauty. She was gorgeous and, even at the ripe age of seven, I knew she was different than other actresses. She was real. Ever since then, so many of her films have become my all-time favorites (The Reader, The Holiday, Finding Neverland…the list goes on.). She’s the type of actress I respect profusely; fantastic at her craft, and honest about life. She’s truly someone I am proud to see on magazine covers; someone I look up to when it comes to body image.

“I was a wayward child, very passionate and very determined. If I made up my mind to do something, there was no stopping me.”

Yes, my life is incredible but oh my god, I have to work at it. It’s the same for any working woman. You run and you work and you try not to let anything drop.

There are moments to indulge and enjoy, but I always know when it’s time to go home and wash my knickers.”

As a child, I never heard one woman say to me: ‘I love my body.’ Not my mother, my elder sister, my best friend. Not one woman has ever said: ‘I am so proud of my body.’ So, I make sure I say it to Mia, because a positive physical outlook has to start from a very early age.”

I’d much rather be known as some curvy Kate than as some skinny stick.”
Nobody is perfect. I just don’t believe in perfection. But I do believe in saying, ‘This is who I am and look at me not being perfect!’ I’m proud of that.

There’s more to life than cheekbones.

I need to be looked after. I’m not talking about diamond rings and nice restaurants and fancy stuff—in fact, that makes me uncomfortable. I didn’t grow up with it and it’s not me, you know. But I need someone to say to me, ‘Shall I run you a bath?’ or ‘Let’s go to the pub, just us.’
I do think it’s important for young women to know that magazine covers are retouched. People don’t really look like that. In films I might look glamorous, but I’ve been in hair and make-up for two hours.”
Even now I do not consider myself to be some kind of great, sexy beauty. I don’t mind the way I’m ageing. No reason to panic just yet. I think I look my age, and that’s fine. The lord God almighty has done me proud with my features which I’m proud of and have no desire to alter them. I say let nature take its course.
I don’t feel like a movie star in my life at all, and I don’t particularly think I behave like one. I don’t have my own plane. I don’t have a chef or a trainer. To me, you’re a movie star only during the time when you’re at the Academy Awards or at an important glamorous event. It’s very much a hat that you wear, and as soon as the event’s over, that hat comes off. I’m back to being me and being Mommy, and that’s my priority. ”
When you’re the mother of small children, life becomes a holiday.
Life is short, and it is here to be lived.”

(Oh, Kate. You’re such an inspiration.)

  1. i love so many of these quotes! i love how confident she is in her own skin. i do take issue with some of the things she says, such as making skinny out to be the enemy. i'm a huge fan of loving your own body, but my pet peeve is when people think they need to compare it to another body type to do so. “skinny sticks” are people too 🙂

  2. I totally agree with you. I don't like that approach either–I think she may be referencing the idea of model-skinny, unhealthy, forced skinny… If that makes sense?

But you're right, neither one should be considered better than the other. Great point.

Games are very popular and provide entertainment for all kinds of people. Most homes have at least a single gaming platform. Obviously that shouldn't mean that you already are aware of everything there is to know about computer games. Use this article to provide you with some great suggestions to enhance all that your online gaming have to offer.

Save your game in multiple slots. Every now and then, save it in another one. There may be a time when you wish to return to the game and do something new. If you just keep saving as you go along, you won't have that option.

Instead of a computer, try a regular games wii system for your kids gaming pleasure. It is easier to control things like privacy and content on a ps3 than it is on a PC. They may have a much more protected experience with a xbox.

Try brightening the screen on your gaming system. Dark games are eerie, but they're also hard to play. Colors tend to blend together in the dark, and you can have a hard time spotting your enemies. Increase the brightness if you do not mind sacrificing a little ambiance. Brightness will allow you to see clearly.

If you have children, be sure to limit the time that your child spends on online games. More than two hours a day can strain their eyes and interfere with other activities.

When you get stuck in a game, you can always look for a cheat code to help you get past the obstacle. There are fans all over who may have gotten stuck at the point you are on and many of them have probably shared the way to finish.

The ESRB rates games. The EC rating stands for early childhood or ages three and older. An E rating applies to games that are good for children aged six and over. E+10 means ten year olds and above can play. A T rating is for the age range of 13 plus. The M rating, also known as Mature, is appropriate for teens aged 17 and up. AO means Adults Only and RP is short for Rating Pending.

Start out with the easiest mode. If you discover a game is too easy, restart the game with a harder difficultly level. Once you have played on a beginner level for awhile, you will find it much easier to eventually play on a harder level.

There are some educational online games. These games are a safe bet for young children. Titles aimed at older children or adults often contain violence or other content unsuitable for children. Check out online reviews from other parents so you can discover appropriate games for your child. Purchase only these games.

It can be tempting to go all out buying expansion packs, add-ons and upgrades for your new game. This can get very pricey! Instead, be disciplined with your spending. Check out what you've got in the game you bought and only add on what you can afford.

Figure out how to operate the safety and parental controls of any gaming system that comes into your home. You can likely make adjustments that keep kids from viewing mature content. Some allow each gaming profile to be customized separately, allowing adults to enjoy games not meant for younger audiences.

You can enjoy video games just for fun, or you can get a world of education and enrichment from them. Hopefully you have learned all you need to understand about video games from this article.
